You can even make your own levels, although putting that much brainpower into Pain might be missing the point entirely.Welcome! My name is James Hill, and I've been in the video game industry for over 13 years. Each stage has a ton of hidden secrets and ways to interact with each other, such as being able to grab a prop bowling ball and roll it around a city area, or smashing into a rollercoaster and holding on for dear life for maximum points. I’m willing to admit my love of Pain is mostly nostalgic, but having dug out my PS3 and played it recently, it has some deceptively tough challenges that’ll have you messing around with levels and characters for more than just “who looks funnier hitting their butt on something spiky”. Just fire them out of a slingshot, get them in a pose that makes them hit their nuts on a rooftop sign, and giggle to yourself. That idiot can be Daxter from Jak and Daxter, Buzz from Buzz, or even David Hasselhoff, but the concept remains the same throughout. My second obscure PS3 indie is thankfully a lot simpler - in Pain, you fire idiots out of a massive slingshot to destroy the environment and try to get as high a score as possible. Let’s hope the new PlayStation Plus changes that. The PSP version is also offline, leaving the action RPG spin-off Fat Princess Adventures as the only remnant of the series. ![]() Sadly, you might never get to experience that for yourself as the game has been offline for nearly a decade now and isn’t even available to buy on the PlayStation Store. I was 11 when I first played Fat Princess, so it was one of my first tastes of online multiplayer. Fat Princess is also robust enough that you can say sod it and decide to be the worker that uses his axe on the enemies and go on the offensive, class purposes be damned. Every class is essential to victory, so even if you’re playing as a Worker that’s just toiling away chopping trees down and helping upgrade the castle, you’re just as important as the Warrior trying to leap into the castle and steal the princess back. ![]() ![]() But when played online against real people, there’s such a massive focus on working together that it ends up feeling really wholesome. For reasons unbeknownst to man, Sony decided to make the titular royal one of the first known characters in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, which means that it’s now basically the only thing the series is known for despite totalling three games.Īt its core, it really is just capture-the-flag but the flag is a fat princess. I’d go even further and bet that it’s not even because of the game itself. If either of these games rings even the slightest of bells, I’d bet it was Fat Princess. If you’re not one of the five paid members of my very cool Fat Princess and Pain appreciation club, let me tell you why. “Hell yeah, Fat Princess and Pain!” is what I’m sure every single one of you are thinking, and you’re right to do so. Anything that hasn’t seen some sort of revival or port usually deserves to stay in the nether zone that is the PlayStation Store’s one-star filter, but after searching my brain far and wide for experiences that remain unplayable on anything but the PS3, I’ve finally come up with two, count ‘em two, obscure indies that deserve some love - Fat Princess and Pain. This is true of many indies from the PS3 era - they’ve practically all been ported or upgraded since. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can control the action either via the touchscreen with the Joy-Cons. The game you’re getting on Nintendo Switch isn’t far removed from the one you may have played on Steam and mobile back in 2016, or the versions ported to PS4 and PS Vita last year. It's very kitsch to say the least, but it's still a fitting physical tie-in for a game that wears its storybook DNA on its sleeve throughout. Well, if you head to this website and enter that code you’ll be able to purchase a hardcover edition of that very story, in all its printed glory. On the spine of each is a special number, one the game tantalisingly dangles in front of you without explanation. It’s a cute way of archiving your experiences, but it also serves another unique purpose. When you finish each tale a book will be added to a shelf back at port, which recounts each adventure you’ve been on with the Brothers Beard. There is, of course, going to be some repetition along the way (we re-experience a fair few of the same sections multiple times during our many playthroughs), and it does dull the experience somewhat if you’re really trying to discover all its oceanic secrets. The lack of agency will rankle those looking for a little more interaction for their buck, but with each sea-based adventure lasting anywhere from around 25-40 minutes per session, it’s very easy to loop together enough bizarre tales to keep yourself entertained. Its web of potential avenues isn’t exactly Mass Effect of something from the David Cage book of consequence-based narratives, but it does create a consistently entertaining experience as the hirsute triumvirate bounce from one encounter to the next. The characters you encounter and the paths the story takes are entirely up to you, with each one splintering off depending on your seemingly innocent choices. From the mystery of what’s to come (the NPCs you meet seemingly knowing nothing of a blank treasure map, a fact that only urges you to set sail again and divine its true purpose) to the use of voices to create everything from the soundtrack to everyday sounds (yes, someone really did record themselves impersonating a coffee machine), it feels pleasantly homemade from top to bottom. It’s here you get a little taster for what Burly Men at Sea is preparing to serve up. Every journey starts with the three titular men of caliber - whimsically-named Hasty Beard, Steady Beard and Brave - discovering a blank map in a bottle, a rather handy plot device that leads them to port in search of answers. Burly Men at Sea’s most memorable moments are best discovered on your own playthrough, so we’ll do our best not to ruin its juiciest bits, but we will say you'll likely encounter them in a unique combination each time you play, and that’s where the real selling point reveals itself. It’s not necessarily about what you do to reach a certain destination, but what you find along the way. As such, there isn’t much actual ‘game’ to be had - you’ll mostly just drag the edge of the screen to move the titular trio of bearded sailors and tap to open doors - but that’s obviously the intention of husband-and-wife studio Brain&Brain is going for. It’s an experience that’s clearly been made with family viewing in mind, its pithy dialogue often winking at the adults as much as its slapstick antics entertains the kids. The end result is something more akin to an interactive storybook than a game. ![]() ![]() You’ll encounter all sorts of weird and wonderful characters as your turn its virtual pages, plotting points on a mysteriously blank map as you choose the chapters that comprise this maritime yarn. Its smooth, fruity taste works to conceal its extremely high alcoholic content. The customer returned several days later to complain that he had been turned into a zombie for his entire trip. The others will finish Krondor for me.Based on Raymond E. Well, it's a hymn of praise, and you learned almost nothing about the game itself or the world of Midkemia, but perhaps I enticed you to at least throw it on the disc and run it. The plot is linear, but thanks to the fact that it is conceived as a (quality) book (which you can read by the way, it is also called, it was published in 1998 (Czech 2001) and I found a lot of quotes from the game, such as the text that appears if Razz kills you), he 's not bored. You will find everything from a barrel of wine, through foreign poisons to a chess piece. What I would like to highlight in particular is the number of items, their descriptions and graphics, in this respect Krondor has really succeeded. There are also not many characteristics and skills of the characters, they are clearly explainable and they improve only with use - so none such that the mage clicks each level 5 into the strength to be able to wear a quality armor ?. The fights are simply solved, similar to the Reams of Arkania. Krondor as a game is simple, but its plot and the solution of all problems are a suitable nut for an experienced RPG player. And it must be said that Krondor has, except for a few places where the game will obviously let you catch your breath for a while, a very captivating momentum. I won't tell! Personally, Krondor enchanted me from the beginning of the previous chapter 1 - you are thrown right into the flow - no explanation of who is who, no tutorial. You will enjoy the text a lot in Krondor, the language is varied and the plot is relatively detective, so a player with at least an average knowledge of English will not only not enjoy the game properly, but will probably not pass either. The chapters are like those in the book - they divide the game according to fundamental actions or unexpected twists. The story is divided into 12 chapters, during which you will take turns the characters you play for (a total of 7 I think). Overall, however, the technical means are true to what this is all about - and this is a particularly strong story in the case of Krondor. The only thing I would like to make out for the interface is the size of the window in which the landscape is displayed, it could have been much more generous (see screenshots). The controls are really simple, from the basic overview to trading, fighting, or puzzles. She's not at some great level, but she definitely didn't hurt the game. The music is properly tuned - in some places unobtrusive, action-packed. Technical side: the graphics are good for their year (1993), the environment is more average, static images, objects, etc. The world of Midkemia is huge and Krondor takes place in a small part of it. Ah, yes, and such a detail - the Krondor screenplay was written by the author himself, Reymond Elias Feist, a fantasy veteran. ![]() ![]() However, Krondor had one advantage at the start - the story is set in a world about which the author has written more than ten (I read them all, but let Gott scare me if I remember how many there were) books.
